What to Do When Inspo Doesn't Live Up To Expectations

Let’s tackle a common gown shopping dilemma. You fall in love with a gown in a photo or on Pinterest. You’re convinced you’re going to love it. You go to the store, you put it on—and it’s not it. What do you do?

Here’s how we pivot:

When a bride feels underwhelmed by the very gown she came in to see, the first thing we do is keep spirits up and keep the party moving. This is when having a knowledgeable bridal stylist is crucial.

Often, the next step is pulling a gown with a similar vibe but by a different designer. Many times, you fell in love with the look of the gown in a photo—the style was right—but the fit wasn’t. Different designers construct gowns differently, which can mean more or less support, volume, or structure than you expected.

Another thing we always do—especially in this scenario—is put you in a wild card gown. This is a completely different style from your original inspiration, but one we know, based on experience, is going to look amazing on you. It acts as a mental reset and helps you let go of the gown you had put so much hope into.

More often than not, the wild card is it.

Which brings me to the bigger point: hold your inspo loosely.

We love when brides come prepared with inspiration—truly. But when you hold that inspo too tightly and want every detail to look exactly like the image, disappointment tends to follow. Inspiration online is often unrealistic, or sometimes completely made up.

This applies to your gown, your florals, your décor—everything. When you hold your inspo loosely, you can place it in the hands of experienced professionals who will suggest alternatives that match your vibe and the essence of what you want, while still being practical for your budget, season, and setting.

So remind yourself of this throughout the wedding planning process: hold your inspo loosely.
