Wedding Day Suit Tips For Grooms
Brides, if your fiancé is planning to wear a suit on your wedding day, and especially if he doesn’t wear suits in his day-to-day, this is for him.
We’re living in more casual times than generations of the past, so grooms can often feel unfamiliar with the do’s and don’ts of wearing a suit. We’re here with a few pointers so that any and every groom can feel confident and comfortable in his wedding day suit.
Proper Tailoring Matters
Poor tailoring can ruin the look of even the most expensive luxury suit, while great tailoring can elevate a very inexpensive one. These rules apply whether the suit is purchased or rented.
If you’re renting a suit or tux, try it on before leaving the store and have the fine details tailored. Proper pant hem length makes a world of difference. Your pants should hit your shoe without pulling too much fabric at the ankle. There should be just a slight break—no excess fabric pooling.
The second crucial tailoring detail is sleeve length. The cuff of your shirt should slightly show beneath the sleeve of your jacket. About a quarter inch to a half inch of shirt cuff is the correct length.
One final tailoring note: always remember to snip the vent stitch at the back of your suit. This often gets overlooked!
How to Wear Your Suit Like a Pro
Anytime you are standing in your suit, it should be buttoned—except for the bottom button. The bottom button of a jacket or vest should always be left open. It’s an age-old rule: top button always, bottom button never.
When seated, unbutton your jacket so it hangs properly. As soon as you stand, button it back up.
Try to keep your jacket on through the beginning of the reception, including dinner and first dances. It will look best in photos. Once the dance floor is officially open, feel free to take it off. A backup shirt is highly recommended—you’ll probably be sweaty. No shame.
One last thing: never put your phone in your pants pocket. Always place it in your interior breast pocket.
Follow these tips and you’re guaranteed to look sharp on your wedding day!
