For the Moms

While a wedding day is obviously centered around the couple saying ‘I Do’, there are lots of key players for whom this day is incredibly special. And with Mother’s Day fast approaching, we thought it was the perfect time to devote some time to the queen bee herself: Mom.

For Mothers of the Bride/Groom, a wedding day can be fun, sentimental, joyful, emotional…the range of emotions is immense. They’re often one of the most photographed people of the entire day, and for some it’s the first time they’re wearing a formal dress since they got married themselves. We’ve gathered a few of our favorite Mother of the Occasion inspiration; women of all shapes, sizes, and ages who nailed their look fabulously.

A few things in mind when selecting your Mother of the Bride/Groom ensemble:

  1. First and foremost, what you’re wearing should feel like you. So while it’s ok to get input from the bride, ultimately she shouldn’t be picking your dress for you. It’s your day too, and you know what you like to wear.

  2. Eliminate the ‘shoulds’ from your vocabulary. Nowhere is there a rule book that says you ‘should’ wear a certain color, or you ‘should’ cover your arms, etc. These days, anything goes!

  3. The goal is not to ‘match’ the bridal party. Ultimately you just want to look like you’re all at the same party. In reality, you’ll probably only have one group photo of everyone together, so don’t stress yourself out trying to find a color that matches the bridesmaids. Instead, think of it as everyone in the wedding party is creating a cohesive color palette together.

  4. Think outside the box! Gone are the days when the mothers’ options were limited to dowdy chiffon dresses with matching jackets. Nowadays mothers sport chick cocktail dresses, sharply tailored suits, elegant jumpsuits, and evening trousers. The sky is the limit.

  5. Shop early! It’s impossible to express just how many moms we talk to who are rushing to find their wedding looks at the last minute. This just adds to the stress and panic! Give yourself plenty of time so you can select something you truly love, rather than settling for what’s available.

  6. Don’t under any circumstances feel like you have to wear beige…unless you happen to feel really fabulous in beige. Wear whatever color makes you happy.

To help you get a jumpstart on your MOB search, we’ve assembled some of our favorite looks for Mothers of the Occasion, and why we think they’re fab. Take a look!

We adore this style for a warm weather wedding. With minimal effort required, this dress could be dressed up with a delicate gold heel, or dressed down with nude sandals for a more casual affair. Simply add earrings and you’re done!

This dress checks all the boxes for details most requested by Mothers of the Bride/Groom: subtle, classic, and able to wear a regular bra :) This cute little number is available in two colors, but we’re partial to the soft blue. And just a heads up, we definitely recommend having the length adjusted by a professional tailor so it’s just right. If you’re on the taller side, mid-calf length is elongating and elegant. If you’re more petite, consider having it hemmed just under the knee to elongate the leg.

Brides for 2023/2024 are loving the look of vibrant, multi-colored florals. So if you’re searching for Mother of the Occasion attire for a wedding with this vibe, we love this flowy floral number! The sleeves are an unexpected touch and perfectly light and appropriate for warmer Spring/Summer temps, and we love the subtle touch of beading to really make it special.

Mothers of the Occasion always look impossibly chic in a classic shirtwaist style gown. The floral print on this number is stunning and subtle, and the silhouette is a great way to have coverage without looking matronly.

We’re loving this beaded number for a more formal event - and since lush greenery has dominated the floral trends for the past few years, we think it’s safe to say green is practically a neutral. We love this gown paired with delicate gold accessories!

And last but not least, we couldn’t resist including a pop of feathers into the mix. We love the elegant shape of this cocktail dress, and the feathers and bold color are perfect for the Mom who is the life of the party. Just make sure your shoes are comfortable enough for dancing!
