4 Tips for Choosing Your Veil

You’ve said ‘yes’ to your dress, now let’s think about your veil!

Assembling your entire bridal look can feel like a daunting task. But with a few helpful tips and tricks, you can find all the essential components that look and feel truly ‘you’. A bridal veil is not something one wears every day, and we’ll be the first to say it’s completely ok to not wear a veil at all! You do you! But if you do want to top off your wedding gown with a bridal veil, we have a few tips to help you sift through the endless miles of tulle to find just the right veil for your bridal look.

Tip #1: if it’s not an immediate ‘yes’, then circle back to it

Often when we’re working with a bride, we have her try on veils with the very favorite gowns; when we’re down to revisiting the final two or three gowns to ultimately decide which is ‘the one’. And sometimes when a bride says ‘yes’ to her dress, the combination with the veil helps solidify the vision and confirm it’s THE dress - easy peasy! In that case, the bride purchases the veil along with the dress, and checks both off her ever-growing wedding to-do list and never looks back.

However, if there’s any lingering curiosity about the veil — are their others I should try? I’m not sure about this length? I’m considering pearls but I’m not sure? — that’s when we suggest circling back to veils when your gown arrives. When a bride comes for her ‘first look’ appointment upon arrival of her gown, we offer the option to book additional time to shop veils and accessories. This allows brides to analyze veils with fresh eyes, and without the added pressure of also selecting the gown itself. It also allows her time to consider her gown, the details, and what she truly wants out of her veil look in the time between ordering her gown and its delivery.

tip #2: avoid shopping for veils online

As an avid online shopper, I can make a case for purchasing literally anything online from the comfort of my sofa. So it brings me no satisfaction to admit that there is one item that should never be purchased online, and that’s a bridal veil. For one thing, bridal veils are very difficult to capture accurately in photographs. The color of a veil is so subjective to the lighting and setting, therefore what you see isn’t always what you get. And since a veil’s quality is so determined by it’s feel and movement, it’s always better to see and touch it in person before purchasing. Which also brings me to my next point:

Tip #3: always try on veils with your gown

It’s not enough to just find a beautiful veil; the veil has to work with your wedding gown. The execution of that combo is key, and one wrong step can create a disjointed overall look. Once you begin trying on veils, you’ll find that a certain length, fabric, and edging will complete your gown better than others, and you would never have known that if you shopped for each piece separately.

tip #4: narrow your options with these two questions:

If you’re feeling a little lost in your veil search, break down the options by asking yourself these questions:

  1. Do I want a full length, cathedral veil? Or do I want a shorter fingertip or waltz length?

  2. Do I want a statement veil that adds detail to my look? Or do I want a simplistic veil that frames my gown without competing with it?
Just by narrowing down your search by length and by detail, you’ll eliminate a vast portion of veils that could otherwise cloud your judgement. The options for veils are literally endless, and you can easily send your brain spinning with possibilities. And by all means, try on different lengths and details before choosing your preferences: you never know what may surprise you once it’s on your body.
